NIA Insulation Articles in Annual Steam Digest
Four articles previously published in the National Insulation Association (NIA) monthly trade publication Insulation Outlook have been incorporated into Steam Digest: Volume IV, published by the Alliance to Save Energy (ASE) and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Industrial Technologies Program (ITP). The additional publicity of these articles helps NIA continue in its goal of educating those responsible for improving the overall efficiency of steam systems through the effective and proper use of insulation.
Steam Digest: Volume IV is a compendium of 10 scholarly articles authored by a variety of manufacturers, national labs, and solution vendors. It covers the technical and managerial aspects of industrial steam facility optimization as well as business-friendly opportunities that can help improve operational performance.
“The inclusion of our articles is important for making the viewers of Steam Digest more aware of the value of insulation,” says NIA Executive Vice President Michele M. Jones. “We are thrilled that four out of ten articles contained in this year’s digest are ours. This is a prime example of our foundation’s efforts to ensure the insulation message is communicated to the end user.”
NIA is a longstanding and active participant in DOE programs. Michele Jones is a member of the DOE Steam BestPractices Executive Committee and is the chair of the Marketing and Business Subcommittee.
“The DOE BestPractices Steam program now regularly includes insulation articles in Steam Digest, because insulation plays a key role in steam-system efficiency,” says Fred Fendt, chair of DOE’s BestPractices Steam Steering Committee and Technical Fellow of Rohm and Haas Company. “When the correct thickness and application is used, insulation conserves thermal resources, which in turn helps reduce fuel consumption, increase system efficiency, and improve workplace safety. Steam Digest readers can certainly benefit from the useful information contained in the insulation articles.”
The NIA is also happy to announce that the current Steam Digest was dedicated in memory of the late William (Bill) W. Pitkin, former executive vice president of the NIA and first and longest-serving chairman of the BestPractices Steam Steering Committee. Pitkin served at his role with the NIA for 19 years, retiring in 2002.
Steam systems are a major energy-intensive component in many manufacturing and institutional facilities, but they often are overlooked and not factored in to a company’s cost- or energy-savings strategy. “It’s no secret that industry needs to embrace energy management and reduce operational costs to stay competitive. Improving steam-system efficiency can help to accomplish this,” says Fendt.
The Alliance reports that the main purpose of the production of Steam Digest is to showcase a compilation of steam efficiency research to a broad audience. Many of the articles are generated from industry event proceedings, such as the annual Industrial Energy Technology Conference or from industry journals. These proceedings and journals are often only distributed to meeting attendees or subscribers. By including them in Steam Digest, they get an even wider distribution and more exposure. More than 2,000 e-mails announcing the publication date of Steam Digest: Volume IV were sent, and hundreds more hard copies are printed for requests.
Although the target audience of the Steam Digest is steam-industry professionals (such as industrial steam end users, engineers, consultants, vendors, and solution providers), it is read by a variety of audiences in the United States and internationally. In addition to requests for the digest, the Alliance distributes copies at its steam awareness workshops and any industry expos or seminars in which it participates.
