Arlene Nash Ferguson:

History and Culture of the Bahamas

From her first Junkanoo parade at the age of 4 and her first produced play with neighborhood children at the early age of 13, it seemed inevitable that Arlene Nash Ferguson’s career path would include education and culture.

A veteran educator, Ferguson served formally in the field of education for 24 years, holding positions of assistant chairperson of the Social Sciences division of the College of the Bahamas, lecturer in history, and then principal of St. John’s College. An avid proponent of Bahamian culture, she launched Educulture Bahamas Limited. This innovative enterprise nurtures the Bahamian citizens and visitors alike, with creative out-of-classroom educational experiences. These creative yet humorous activities will have your group intrigued and entertained.

Ferguson’s presentation will include a brief history of the Bahamas and the mixed traditions that have evolved; an explanation of Bahamian dialect and how to use it; and a brief introduction on Bahamian culture. Audience participation is encouraged through various Q&A sessions. Brunch will also be served.

Island Style: A Fashion Show

True to the distinct style of the Bahamas, the Free Flowing Fashion show from Cole’s of Nassau will be an experience to remember. In addition to fashion, Cole’s of Nassau will showcase unique island accessories. Your hostess for the afternoon will be well versed in Bahamian couture and will narrate the approximately 30-minute show. In addition, a straw vendor and jewelry maker will be displaying and selling locally crafted items.
